IELTS-Style Reading & Spatial Reasoning Assessment

Instructions to Candidates:

  1. You are advised to spend approximately 20 minutes on this section.
  2. Read the 'Needs Analysis' (Part A) and 'Site Analysis' (Part B) carefully.
  3. For Part C, use the information provided in Parts A and B to complete the spatial plan.
  4. For each numbered location (1-4, corresponding to A, B, C, D on the plan) on the answer sheet, write the name of the correct zone (Main Gallery, Digital Skills Workshop, Pottery Studio, or Community Café & Entrance).
  5. Then, in the space provided, write ONE SENTENCE ONLY to justify your placement decision for that zone. Your justification should clearly refer to both the community needs and the site characteristics.
  6. Your answers must be written in the spaces provided on the answer sheet.

Questions 1-4: Plan Labelling with Justification

You are an architectural assistant tasked with converting a client's brief and a site analysis report into a preliminary spatial plan. This task tests your ability to synthesise different types of information (user needs and site constraints) into a logical and justifiable design solution.

The Scenario

A new community arts hub is being planned for a ground-floor space at the Kai Tak Development. You have been given a summary of the 'Needs Analysis' from community consultations and a brief 'Site Analysis' of the empty venue.

Part A: The Needs Analysis (Client Brief Summary)

The community consultation identified the need for four distinct zones:

  1. Main Gallery: A large, quiet space for displaying visual art. It needs the best possible natural light—consistent and diffuse—to avoid damaging artwork with harsh direct sun. Main Gallery placeholder
  2. Digital Skills Workshop: A computer lab for teaching digital art. This area generates some noise from equipment and discussion, and needs to be secure. Digital Skills Workshop placeholder
  3. Pottery Studio: A "wet and messy" area that requires direct access to a water source (plumbing) and good ventilation. It will also need deliveries of clay and other heavy materials. Pottery Studio placeholder
  4. Community Café & Entrance: A welcoming social space that should be the first thing people see when they enter. It needs to feel open and connected to the main public thoroughfare. Community Café placeholder

Part B: The Site Analysis (Venue Constraints & Opportunities)

  • The main entrance faces a busy public plaza to the South.
  • The North wall is almost entirely glass, providing consistent, diffuse natural light.
  • The West wall is adjacent to a noisy main road.
  • The East wall has a large service entrance/loading bay and is where the main plumbing and ventilation shafts are located.

Part C: The Spatial Synthesis (Your Plan)

Refer to the 'Needs Analysis' and 'Site Analysis' provided. For each location (A, B, C, or D) on the 'PRELIMINARY SPATIAL PLAN' below, write the name of the zone that best fits, followed by a one-sentence justification.
