Diagnostic Assessment

Section E: Conceptual Abstraction - Ideas into Icons

Category I: Language & Verbal Reasoning - 4. Descriptive Writing / Creative Essay
Examination Paper: Section E

Instructions for Students: This section is designed to assess your ability to combine creative visual thinking with clear, articulate written communication, a skill crucial for both architectural studies and high performance in the IELTS exam. Pay close attention to both the visual representation and the clarity and coherence of your written explanation, similar to how you would approach an IELTS Writing Task.

Suggested Time Limit for Question 5: 25 minutes (10 minutes for Part A, 15 minutes for Part B)

Question 5: The Symbol-Smith's Thesis

This section assesses your ability to distill a complex idea into a clear visual symbol and explain the rationale behind your design.

Part A: The Visual Task

On the blank space provided below, create a simple, 2D, black-and-white graphic symbol (like a logo) that represents the abstract concept of "Tension."

  • Important: Your symbol must be abstract. Do not draw a literal picture of something under tension (e.g., no pictures of a rope being pulled, a bridge, or a rubber band).
  • The design should be simple and clear, focusing on the relationship between shapes, lines, and space.

Part B: The Written Task

Below your symbol, write a short paragraph of at least 150 words that explains the rationale behind your design. Your explanation should act as a bridge, helping a viewer understand how the visual choices you made symbolize the concept of "Tension." This task evaluates your ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and coherently, similar to an IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 where you explain an argument or solution.

You should aim to use some of the following terms in your explanation to demonstrate a rich lexical resource and precision in language:

Represents   Symbolizes   Evoke   Relationship   Dynamic / Static   Abstract   Negative space

Focus on developing your ideas logically, ensuring your sentences are grammatically accurate and varied.
