Technical Interpretation & Calculation Module
Scenario: An architect's first job is to correctly interpret a client's needs from a verbal or written description. This task tests your ability to translate a detailed text-based brief into an accurate architectural drawing and precise calculations. Attention to detail is critical for both your university application and for the IELTS exam.
"A client, Mohan, has a small piece of land, fifteen feet six inches in length & nine feet six inches in breadth. He decides to build a single room on this land. The room has a nine-inch wall on all four sides. He decides to have a door measuring three feet in width and seven feet in height, and two windows, each measuring four feet in height and three feet in width. The room's internal height is ten feet. After the room is built, Mohan decides to get the inside walls & ceiling painted. Calculate the internal area of the room to be painted."
(You may use A4 or A3 paper for the drawing. Spend no more than 60 minutes on this task, including reading time.)
Choose NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS from the passage for each answer.
Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.
| Feature | Dimension 1 | Dimension 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Land (External) | Fifteen feet six inches | 4. |
| Door (Opening) | 5. | Seven feet |
| Single Window (Opening) | Three feet | 6. |
| Room (Internal) | Internal height | 7. |
Produce a simple, neat, two-dimensional floor plan of the room. Your plan should be drawn from a bird's-eye view and clearly label all relevant dimensions (room length/width, wall thickness, door/window locations and sizes).
Provide a step-by-step calculation of the total internal surface area that needs to be painted. This includes the four internal walls and the ceiling. You must show your work for each step (calculating the area of each wall, the area of the openings, and the final total).
