Category I: Language & Verbal Reasoning - 4. Descriptive Writing / Creative Essay
Examination Paper

Objective: This assessment is designed to create a detailed profile of your current skills, logical processes, and creative strategies. There are no right or wrong "personalities," only different approaches. Your responses will help us build a personalized curriculum that targets your unique needs and amplifies your strengths for your UK university applications. Please attempt every task to the best of your ability.

PREPARING FOR IELTS: Academic Module Focus

This diagnostic assessment combines specialized architectural tasks with formats inspired by the IELTS Academic Module. Your performance in these tasks will not only evaluate your architectural aptitude but also your proficiency in academic English, including reading comprehension, vocabulary use, and argumentative writing skills essential for university success abroad.

Pay close attention to instructions, word limits, and the clarity of your expression, as these are critical components of IELTS evaluation.

IELTS Academic Module - Task 1 (Visual Interpretation & Preparatory Sketch): The Visual Debate

Time Allotment: Approximately 30-40 minutes (for drawing and initial conceptualisation).

Scenario: You are presented with a socio-architectural dilemma. Imagine a historical monument in your city has been encroached upon by modern slums and shanties. The ancient, carved stone is now touching makeshift walls of corrugated metal, and laundry lines are strung between a centuries-old statue and a temporary shelter. This visual scenario demands your interpretation and representation.

Your Task: Create a single, detailed pencil sketch of this scene. Your drawing should not just depict the two elements side-by-side but capture the tension, interaction, and story of their coexistence. Focus on using texture, light, and shadow to convey a specific atmosphere or social commentary.

This visual task serves as the basis for a subsequent written analysis, similar to how diagrams or graphs are used in IELTS Writing Task 1. Your ability to translate complex information into a coherent visual narrative will be assessed.

IELTS Academic Module - Task 2 (Essay Writing): The Portfolio Defence

Time Allotment: Approximately 20-30 minutes.

Instructions: Imagine the drawing you just created (from Task 1) is a key piece in your university application portfolio. Write an explanatory text to accompany the image, demonstrating your analytical and descriptive writing skills. This task is similar to an IELTS Writing Task 2 essay, requiring you to develop an argument or explanation in response to a prompt.

"Tell us about what themes emerge from the works you have submitted... What ideas drove the work? What compelled you...? How do your visual choices reflect your intellectual inquiry?"

In your response:

  • You must write at least 150 words (aim for 200 words as specified in the original prompt, but 150 is the IELTS minimum for Task 2 to avoid penalty).
  • You must correctly use at least THREE of the following academic vocabulary words. Incorporate them naturally to enhance your lexical resource.
  • Juxtaposition
  • Encroachment
  • Heritage
  • Dissonance
  • Urban Fabric
  • Palimpsest

Your response will be assessed on Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Ensure your ideas are well-supported and logically organised.
