Question 1: The Alchemist's Table

Part A: The Drawing Task (Suggested Time: 45 Minutes)

Scenario: Imagine you are sitting in front of a simple table. On the table are two objects:

Transparent glass bottle

1. Transparent glass bottle, water-filled

Opaque ceramic bottle

2. Solid, dark, opaque ceramic bottle

  1. A completely transparent glass bottle, filled with water.
  2. A solid, dark, opaque ceramic bottle with a matte finish (it is not shiny).

A single, strong light is shining on them from the upper left side.

Your Task: Using a pencil, create a still-life drawing of this composition. Your primary goal is to capture the difference in how light interacts with these two materials. Pay close attention to:

  • The bright highlights on the surfaces.
  • The shapes of the shadows cast on the table.
  • How the transparent bottle bends and distorts the view of the table and the space behind it.
  • The relationship and arrangement of the two bottles.
