St. Joseph's College (SJC)

Entrance Assessment Practice

(Chinese Integrated Skills)

(Situational Response & Reflection)

2. English Reading Aloud and Comprehension

First, please read the following passage aloud. Then, answer the questions below.

St. Joseph's College, founded in 1875, has a very long history. Its motto is "Labore et Virtute," which means "Labour and Virtue" in Latin. Our campus has beautiful historic buildings, like the North and West Blocks, which are declared monuments. We believe in all-round development, which means we care about your studies, your sports, your creativity, and your character. As we celebrate our long history, we also look to the future with projects like "Vision 22," which will bring new facilities like an arts centre to our historic campus. We encourage every Josephian to work hard and be a good person, contributing to our green and white family.

Questions:

  1. In your own words, what does "all-round development" mean at SJC?
  2. The passage mentions SJC has both historic buildings and future projects. Why do you think it is important for a school to keep its old traditions while also building new things?
  3. You are good at many activities like math, piano, and running. How can you use these talents to contribute to the "green and white family" at SJC?

(Problem Solving & Logic)

A B C D

4. Personal Growth & Aspirations

Tell us about yourself.

Question: "We can see from your profile that you are a Math Ambassador at your primary school and have learned Japanese. SJC offers many subjects, including French and Japanese. If you were admitted to SJC, would you continue learning Japanese or try a new language like French? How would you use your experience as a Math Ambassador to help your new classmates at SJC, especially those who find math difficult?"

Task: "Imagine it is your first week at SJC. You feel a little lost because the campus is big and you don't know many people. You see two boys arguing about a football game during recess. Based on SJC's values of 'Virtue' and being part of a supportive 'family', what would you do? Explain your actions step-by-step."

Entrance Assessment Practice

(Chinese Situational Dialogue & Problem Solving)

2. English Picture Storytelling & Interaction

Look at the four pictures below which show a story about a day at WYK's orientation camp. Tell a complete story.
🗺️

1. Map of Wan Chai

🍳

2. Cooking Challenge

🔥

3. Campfire Performance

🤝

4. Helping a Teammate

Follow-up Questions:

  1. In your story, which activity was the most challenging for the students? Why?
  2. The motto of Wah Yan is "In hoc signo vinces" (By this sign, you shall conquer). How did the students in your story 'conquer' the challenges of the orientation camp?
  3. Some people say WYK is a 'free' school. From your story, what do you think 'freedom' means at Wah Yan?

(Mathematics in Life)

4. Self-Introduction & Values

Please introduce yourself and answer the following question.

Question: "Hello! Please tell us about your hobbies and one achievement you are most proud of. In your primary school, you were part of the football team and the Public Service Corps. Wah Yan has over 40 clubs, including a strong football team and many service groups. How will you balance your interest in sports with your passion for serving the community if you join our school? Please give a specific example of an activity you would like to organize."

Ethical Question: "An Instagram comment about WYK mentioned that 'phones are often confiscated'. While Wah Yan values freedom, there are also school rules. Imagine you see your classmate secretly using his phone to play games during a lesson. What would you do and why? Explain how your action reflects the spirit of being a 'Wahyanite'."

(Interview Tips and Model Answers)

(Chinese Integrated Skills) - SJC

2. English Reading Aloud and Comprehension - SJC

Why this is asked: This section tests fundamental English skills: pronunciation, fluency (reading aloud), and comprehension (understanding the text). The questions are designed to see if you can move beyond simple repetition to interpret the school's core values ("all-round development"), think critically about concepts like tradition vs. modernity, and personally connect your own skills to the school's community spirit ("green and white family").

Strategy and Key Points for Model Answers:

  • Reading Aloud: Read clearly and at a natural pace. Pay attention to punctuation. Don't worry if you make a small mistake; just correct it and continue confidently.
  • Q1 (All-round development): Don't just repeat the passage. Explain it simply. "It means SJC doesn't only care about my grades in exams. The school also wants me to be good at sports, to be creative in art and music, and most importantly, to be a kind and helpful person."
  • Q2 (Tradition vs. New): Show your thoughtful side. "Keeping old buildings is like remembering our school's story and respecting the people who came before us. But building new things is also important because the world is changing. We need new technology and new spaces, like the arts centre, to learn new skills. It's like having old roots and new branches on a strong tree."
  • Q3 (Contributing to the family): Link your specific skills to school life. "I can use my running skills to join the track and field team and win for the school. For math, I can join the Math Club and maybe help classmates who need it, just like how I was a Math Ambassador. For piano, I can perform at school events, like morning assembly or the anniversary celebration. I want to share my talents with everyone in the SJC family."

(Chinese Situational Dialogue & Problem Solving) - WYK

2. English Picture Storytelling & Interaction - WYK

Why this is asked: This task assesses creativity, narrative structure, and English fluency. The chosen pictures (based on real O-camp events) check if you can create a coherent story from visual prompts. The follow-up questions test deeper understanding: critical thinking ("most challenging activity"), your grasp of the school's motto ("conquer challenges"), and your interpretation of its unique culture ("free school").

Strategy and Key Points for Model Answers:

  • Storytelling:
    • Structure: Give your story a beginning, a middle, and an end. Name the main character (e.g., "This is Tom, a new F.1 student at WYK.").
    • Connect the pictures: "First, Tom and his team got a map (Pic 1) for the city tracing game in Wan Chai. It was exciting! Later, they had a cooking challenge (Pic 2). It was hard, but they worked together. That night, they had a wonderful campfire (Pic 3) and sang songs. During the day, Tom saw his teammate was feeling upset, so he went to comfort him and helped him (Pic 4). He learned that being a Wahyanite is about teamwork and caring for others."
  • Q1 (Most challenging): Be specific. "I think the cooking challenge (Pic 2) was the most difficult. They are young and may not cook often. They had to decide the menu, prepare the food, and cook it in a limited time. It needs a lot of teamwork and communication."
  • Q2 (Conquer challenges): Link to the motto. "They 'conquered' the challenges not by winning, but by working together. They conquered their shyness at the campfire. They conquered their selfishness by helping each other. So, 'conquer' here means to overcome your own weakness and become a better person, a 'Man for and with others'."
  • Q3 ('Free' school): Show your understanding. "Freedom at Wah Yan doesn't mean you can do anything you want. It means you have the freedom to try new things, like organizing the campfire performance. But you also have the responsibility to work with your team and take care of each other, as shown in the last picture. It's freedom with responsibility."
