St. Joseph's College was started by the Lasallian Brothers. A key value for all Lasallian schools is "Faith and Zeal". "Faith" is about believing in yourself and others. "Zeal" means having a passion and energy for doing good things. For students at SJC, this means trying your best not only in your studies but also in helping the community. The school motto, "Fide et Labore" (By Faith and Toil), reminds every student that hard work and belief are the keys to success.

At Wah Yan, students are given a lot of freedom. This freedom is a chance to learn and to be responsible. A famous alumnus once said that the school "lets you grow by letting you be." This means students can explore their interests, from joining the orchestra to competing in the Hong Kong Olympiad in Informatics (HKOI). However, with freedom comes the responsibility to manage your time well and make good choices. It is a key part of becoming a "Wah Yan Boy".
